Who it may help
For painful muscle knots associated with myofascial pain.
What happens
After identifying a tender muscle area, the clinician uses a small needle and may inject local anesthetic, sometimes with another medication. This differs from an injection into the spine or a joint.
After the procedure
Temporary soreness can occur. A plan may include stretching, movement and physical therapy so pain relief supports function. Benefits and the need for further treatment vary.
Risks & limitations
Possible risks include bruising, bleeding, infection and allergy. Rare injury to nearby structures, including a lung when treating certain chest or upper-back muscles, is possible.
Before any procedure
Tell your team about all medications and supplements, blood thinners, allergies, diabetes, possible pregnancy and any infection. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own. Follow the specific instructions you receive about food, drink, transportation and activity.
