Who it may help
For selected pain conditions involving the sympathetic nervous system, such as some cases of complex regional pain syndrome.
What happens
Numbing medication is placed near sympathetic nerves with imaging guidance. The target depends on the painful area. A block may help determine whether these nerves contribute to symptoms.
After the procedure
The treated area may feel warmer or temporarily different. Blood pressure and recovery are monitored. Relief varies and may create an opportunity to participate in rehabilitation.
Risks & limitations
Risks depend on the injection site and include bleeding, infection, allergy, low blood pressure and injury to nearby structures. Your clinician explains the specific risks of the proposed block.
Before any procedure
Tell your team about all medications and supplements, blood thinners, allergies, diabetes, possible pregnancy and any infection. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own. Follow the specific instructions you receive about food, drink, transportation and activity.
