Who it may help
An option for carefully selected persistent pain when other treatments have not provided sufficient benefit.
What happens
A device sends electrical signals through leads near the spinal cord to change how pain signals are experienced. Evaluation and a temporary trial usually precede a decision about a permanent implant.
After the procedure
Trial and implant recovery have specific movement and wound-care restrictions. The device needs programming and ongoing follow-up. It manages symptoms rather than curing the underlying condition.
Risks & limitations
Risks include infection, bleeding, lead movement, device failure, loss of benefit and rare serious nerve or spinal cord injury. Device-specific MRI restrictions must be discussed.
Before any procedure
Tell your team about all medications and supplements, blood thinners, allergies, diabetes, possible pregnancy and any infection. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own. Follow the specific instructions you receive about food, drink, transportation and activity.
