Who it may help
To investigate or ease pain associated with a particular spinal nerve root.
What happens
Using imaging, the physician places a small amount of local anesthetic, sometimes with steroid, near the selected nerve. The response can help connect symptoms with examination and scan findings.
After the procedure
Temporary relief may be useful diagnostic information, even if pain returns. Record changes as instructed. Recovery and further treatment depend on the injection site and medication.
Risks & limitations
Risks include soreness, temporary numbness or weakness, bleeding, infection and allergic reaction. Rare serious nerve or blood-vessel injury can occur. A positive response alone does not prove the diagnosis.
Before any procedure
Tell your team about all medications and supplements, blood thinners, allergies, diabetes, possible pregnancy and any infection. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own. Follow the specific instructions you receive about food, drink, transportation and activity.
