Who it may help
For selected pain linked to a nerve outside the brain and spinal cord.
What happens
The physician places medicine near a targeted nerve. The location, imaging method and medication depend on the nerve involved. Blocks may be used to investigate the pain source or provide temporary relief.
After the procedure
Numbness or weakness may outlast the appointment. Protect the affected area from injury until sensation and movement recover. Follow your individualized activity instructions.
Risks & limitations
Possible complications include bruising, bleeding, infection, allergy, nerve injury and rare anesthetic toxicity. A block may not provide relief; the response helps guide the next discussion.
Before any procedure
Tell your team about all medications and supplements, blood thinners, allergies, diabetes, possible pregnancy and any infection. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own. Follow the specific instructions you receive about food, drink, transportation and activity.
