Who it may help
A heat-based disc procedure sometimes considered for carefully selected disc-related back pain.
What happens
A catheter is guided into the disc and applies controlled heat to part of its outer ring. This aims to alter pain-sensitive tissue; it should not be described as a guaranteed repair of a torn disc.
After the procedure
Evidence of benefit is inconsistent. Discuss why this option is being considered, available alternatives and the likelihood of further treatment. Rehabilitation and restrictions are individualized.
Risks & limitations
Risks include disc infection, nerve injury, heat-related tissue damage and persistent or worsening pain. Treatment availability and suitability need direct confirmation with the physician.
Before any procedure
Tell your team about all medications and supplements, blood thinners, allergies, diabetes, possible pregnancy and any infection. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own. Follow the specific instructions you receive about food, drink, transportation and activity.
