Who it may help
For suspected pain from the small joints that connect the bones of the spine.
What happens
A joint injection places medication inside a facet joint. A medial branch block places numbing medicine near the nerves serving that joint. These are related but different procedures; the doctor explains which is appropriate.
After the procedure
Keeping a pain diary can help assess a diagnostic block. Early numbing relief may wear off. Results may guide further care, including consideration of radiofrequency ablation.
Risks & limitations
Soreness, bleeding, infection, allergy and nerve irritation are possible. If a steroid is used, temporary flushing or increased blood sugar can occur. Relief is not guaranteed.
Before any procedure
Tell your team about all medications and supplements, blood thinners, allergies, diabetes, possible pregnancy and any infection. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own. Follow the specific instructions you receive about food, drink, transportation and activity.
