Who it may help
A diagnostic test considered in selected cases of persistent back pain; it is not a pain-relief treatment.
What happens
Contrast is placed into selected discs under imaging guidance. You describe whether the sensation resembles your usual pain. The doctor considers these responses alongside scans and examination findings.
After the procedure
Temporary back soreness may occur. Results are not perfectly reliable and should not be used alone to choose treatment. Ask why this invasive test is needed and whether other tests can answer the question.
Risks & limitations
Risks include disc infection, bleeding, headache, allergy, nerve injury and worsening pain. It is generally not a first-line test for back pain.
Before any procedure
Tell your team about all medications and supplements, blood thinners, allergies, diabetes, possible pregnancy and any infection. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own. Follow the specific instructions you receive about food, drink, transportation and activity.
