Advanced & diagnostic options

Percutaneous disc decompression · nucleoplasty

For selected disc-related symptoms after assessment of the type and location of a disc problem.

Who it may help

For selected disc-related symptoms after assessment of the type and location of a disc problem.

What happens

A needle-based device removes or reduces a small amount of disc material to lower pressure. Mechanical decompression and nucleoplasty use different technologies; the proposed technique should be explained specifically.

After the procedure

Suitability is narrow and recovery depends on the procedure. Activity restrictions and rehabilitation may be needed. Improvement is not guaranteed and additional treatment or surgery may still be necessary.

Risks & limitations

Risks include infection within the disc, bleeding, nerve injury, persistent or worsening pain and failure to improve. Ask how the proposed method compares with continued nonsurgical care and surgical alternatives.

Before any procedure

Tell your team about all medications and supplements, blood thinners, allergies, diabetes, possible pregnancy and any infection. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own. Follow the specific instructions you receive about food, drink, transportation and activity.
