Have you ever gone through a day where you had to endure hours of heel pain? Sometimes even ruin your day because of it? Let’s try try to figure out what these different types of heel pain are and learn how to properly treat them. First we’ll have to figure out why we have foot pain in the first place. Pain in the foot can be due to a problem in any part of the foot. Bones, ligaments, tendons, muscles, fascia, toenail beds, nerves, blood vessels, or skin can be the source of foot pain. Now that we know what causes the pain, what different types of pain are there and how do we treat them? There are a few examples such as: Metatarsalgia – a pain in the ball of the foot, which is often caused by inflammation. Shoes that do not fit well are the usual causes of metatarsalgia.
Treatment for metatarsalgia include: Pain relievers, wearing better and more comfortable footwear, and using pressure relieving inserts for shoes. Plantar Fascitiis – is the most common cause of heel pain. Plantar fascia is when a band of tough tissue connecting the heel bone to the toes becomes irritated or inflamed. Heel pain, often during in the mornings when getting out of bed, is one of the most common symptom. Arch pain may also be present. There are different treatments for plantar fasciitis including: resting, pain relievers, calf and foot muscle stretches and wearing good shoes that do not strain the heels. Calcaneus Fracture – another type of heel pain is caused by a fracture of the heel bone (calcaneus), the most commonly fractured foot bone. It is most often caused by high impact to the heel – like when a person falls from a height or was involved in a car accident. Injuries can range from a bone crack caused by a new vigorous exercise plan to a shattered bone from a high fall. Heel pain, bruising, swelling, limping, or difficulty walking are the main symptoms.
Treatments for calcaneus fractures include: Resting your feet, wearing a shoe with a better heel padding, encasing the leg to to protect the bone, drinking pain relievers, and physical therapy. Heel Spurs – abnormal growths of bone on the bottom of the heel bone that may be caused by an abnormal gait, posture or walking, using ill-fitting shoes, or certain strenuous activities. Spurs may cause foot pain while walking or standing. It is important to note that heel spurs can also occur in people with plantar fasciitis, but they do not cause plantar fasciitis. People with flat feet or high arches are more likely to have foot pain from heel spurs. Multiple treatments for heel spurs include: wearing a shoe with a cutout heel pad, drinking pain relievers, using a custom made shoe insert, rest for the hurting foot, physical therapy, and in some sever cases even surgery. Most types of heel pain are caused by physical activities that put too much stress on the foot. It is often a good idea to take a break from walking or any physical activity for 5 minutes every 30 minutes, or 10 minutes for every hour of activities.
