If you suffer from chronic lower back pain, the issue may be related to issues with the actual discs in your spine. Intradiscal thermal therapy (also known as Intradiscal Electrothermal Therapy) is a fairly new treatment option that has been helping many people get the relief they need. You may need to have a discography performed prior to this procedure to help identify the exact cause of your back problems. If they are related to degeneration of the annulus of the disc or that the nerve fibers have grown in toward the center of the disc, IDET may be an excellent solution.
If intradiscal thermal therapy is a good option for you we can have your procedure schooled right away. We offer effective intradiscal thermal therapy in NYC, New York and will work hard to help you to get the best possible results. How IDET is Performed
This procedure starts off with a sedative to help you remain calm as well as a local anesthetic so you don’t feel any discomfort while it is performed. When ready the doctor will use a fluoroscopy to allow them to see what they are doing when inserting a hollow needle toward the disc that is causing the problems. This needle contains a catheter and a heating element that is guided directly toward the spinal disc in question.
Once in place the heating element is activated slowly until it reaches approximately 194 degrees Fahrenheit. This high temperature will destroy the nerve fibers while at the same time helping to strengthen the disc tissue so that any small tears are sealed up. To help ensure your disc does not become infected after the procedure you will be given antibiotics before or during the therapy.
Intradiscal Thermal Therapy Recovery
Once the procedure is done you will be able to go home to recover. It is important to note that this procedure doesn’t typically provide immediate relief, and may actually cause the pain to increase slightly for the first day or two. After that point the pain should start to subside. You’ll need to perform physical therapy to help aid the recovery. You’ll be given very specific exercises to perform for the first couple of months after the procedure, and directed to avoid heavy lifting or bending. Long periods of sitting are also discouraged.
In most cases you can return to more strenuous activities such as skiing, running or other types of physical activities within five or six months. Of course, you will be working directly with your doctor and/or physical therapist to identify the exact recovery schedule to follow.
